Coulda. Shoulda.

So close. This close. And it need never have come down to a last-second desperation shot.

If just two of those early first-half clunkers had gone in. If the team had shot 8 for 12 from the line, well within its capabilities, instead of 5 for 12.

The Wildcats can take heart from the fact that in all other aspects of the game they played well enough to win.

But taking heart just isn’t enough today.

Next year? Jason Richards is gone, and as I said earlier, a Davidson point guard will not lead the nation in assists again in my children’s lifetimes. That tells you all you need to know right there.

Still, we can take pride in the class with which the team represented the school. It was a couple of weeks to remember, and if 1969 is any guide, I will remember, long after today.

UPDATE: After CBS spends a week promoting Davidson as a Cinderella story, the CBS Web site says Kansas puts an end to Davidson’s “feel-good nonsense” with a “convincing” win. “Feel-good nonsense”? They beat the Big East and Big Ten champions. And a 2-point win that almost wasn’t is “convincing”?? [Expletive.]

  1. Yeah, I’m not sure I agree with the inbounds on that final play, but it was one heck of a game and an amazing run.

  2. The two points is almost worse than if it had been 10. I watched in a bar with a bunch of other alums and we were all pretty close to wetting our collective pants in those last few seconds. But it shows what kind of people Davidson attracts. We all stood and gave them a round of applause after that final buzzer.

And I stand corrected on the level of passion with which I am obligated to loathe Kansas. So, where does Kentucky rate on that level? Because I hate them, too.

  5. You must loathe Kentucky even more than Kansas, on account of Rick Pitino. (Also, Texas really needs to do something about Rick Barnes.)

  6. Kansas (of Rock. Choke. Jayhawk.) is more deserving of pity and scorn than hatred, but Davidson alums certainly have every right to loathe them for a few days. I, on the other hand, relish the thought of Hansbrough suckering them into collapsing in the lane only to have Wayne Ellington and Danny Green collectively rain threes upon their furrowed brows all night Saturday.

  7. I eagerly look forward to this. “Kickout” is going to take on a double meaning on Saturday.
