It might seem strange to you that there’s a nontrivial chance that a combined hurricane/nor’easter/snowstorm could hit the New York area the day before Halloween. And indeed, even in the era of climatic instability caused by global warming, it is strange … though not unheard-of.

However, things got a lot stranger than that barely seven years ago. It’s a comic strip, but all “dialogue” really happened.

Gift Theft of the Magi

For those who aren’t familiar with Greensboro, the famous short-story writer O. Henry grew up here. (There are a boulevard and a hotel named after him.) Perhaps the most famous Henry story is “Gift of the Magi,” in which (spoiler alert) a poor husband and wife exchange Christmas gifts: She cuts off and sells her long, beautiful hair to buy a fob for his watch, which he has sold to buy a set of combs for her hair.

The webcomic XKCD has a new take on the old story.
