An AIM suggestion

No, not Accuracy in Media. I mean AOL Instant Messenger.

It’s the world’s most-used instant-messaging system, apparently, but the software, although free, doesn’t have a lot of features. For example, it will only let you log on with one user name at a time, which has got to be frustrating for those of you who want to spend your time in cyberspace as, simultaneously, yourself, an underage hooker and a dog.

You might want to try DeadAIM, which describes itself as an “AIM enhancer.” I haven’t tried it; this is information, not an endorsement. (Also, anything on the Internet that calls itself an “enhancer,” I’m pretty suspicious of.)

Myself, I use (and recommend) Trillian, freeware that allows simultaneous use of multiple IM services: ICQ, MSN, Yahoo!, AIM and IRC. Currently, the free version allows you only one logged-in user name at a time per service, but since I’m never online as anyone but myself, that’s fine with me.
