Blog on the Run: Reloaded

Hamalot. Spamalotmore.

I learned something tonight while corresponding with the folks at WordPress, which powers and hosts my blog, about a particularly bothersome IP address whence oodles of comment spam has been emanating over the past couple of days: Comment spam is a huge problem, even bigger than I thought. (The graphic and numbers on that page speak for themselves.)

I’m not complaining about WordPress, however. Its Akismet spam filter is far and away the best I’ve found for dealing with comment spam, and I highly recommend it. (And they’re not paying me anything to say that.) When I look at the volume of comment spam they’re dealing with, I am amazed at how little actually does get through. I probably get about one comment or two comment spams for every real comment. Without Akismet, it looks as if I’d be getting somewhere between 12 and 16 comment spams per real comment.

Spammers are among the biggest reasons I haven’t renounced my allegiance to the death penalty.

  1. I favor cruel & unusual punishment instead.

  2. I think we should make them copy every last one of their spammy little emails on the blackboard in neat, legible penmanship. And then go stand in the corner.

Wait, do we even have blackboards anymore?

  3. We have dry-erase boards now. Same function, fewer lung ailments. Which, in the case of spammers, is a bummer, but I’ll take what I can get.
