The first one comes with the uniform. The rest you have to earn.

Unarmed and Increasingly Dangerous

Hooper accepts congratulations from his tae kwon do instructor, Milady Richter, after winning his yellow belt earlier tonight.

He’s learning from the best (here), and we feel very lucky to have her teaching his class. Hooper is embarrassed to admit it, but he adores her, having recently paid her his highest compliment: He asked me if she could come and babysit.

  1. That is so cool! I love his instructor’s name…and woe to him who makes fun of it.

  2. No kidding. As the linked article says, Milady is tiny even by the standards of 14-year-old ninth graders (although that’s not really obvious from this photo), but when I first saw her kick during Hooper’s first class, I realized that she could take the jaw off a guy who’s 6 feet 6 … and make it look real easy.

  3. Oh hell. Money making opportunity alert. Why is there no women’s UFC yet? Good lord, who wouldn’t pay to see that?

  4. Yeah, but as the father of a young girl I kinda felt it would be in poor taste to be the one to bring it up.

Damn my upbringing, costing me so much income.

  5. All I can say is: Awwwww.

  6. Milady is my niece (baby sister’s daughter) so be nice to me or I will sic her on you. :)
We are proud of her and all the family here in Michigan as well.
Hooper is a good looking little butt kicker too.

  7. Welcome, Grog! I had e-mailed your sister about this blog post, and when we came in for the next lesson (last Tuesday; we missed Thursday because the bad weather had me working), she told me about your long and active online career. At least, I presume it was you; do y’all have additional brothers?

Thanks for the comment about Hooper. He gets full of himself sometimes, but he’s really a good-hearted kid, and tae kwon do is doing exactly what your sister said it would: It’s helping him channel his energy constructively. Your sister (whose name I am deliberately omitting absent her permission to use it) actually has talked me about halfway into taking up tae kwon do myself. I’m recovering from surgery at the moment, however, so I have some time to reflect on this.

  8. Oh, and David, in case you stop back by and speaking of UFC: There’s a TKD tourney coming up at the coliseum on March 17.
