Twenty-five years ago today …

… or thereabouts, two Atlanta bands were rocking my world: the Swimming Pool Qs and even moreso, The Brains. (The Brains’ “Money Changes Everything” is neck and neck with Graham Parker’s “Discovering Japan” as the song I’d pick to be on a deserted island with.) The Brains rocked my particular neck of the woods on two occasions: opening for Devo in July 1980 at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta, and on the night before my college graduation at the Milestone Club in Charlotte.

Neither band attained the greatness it deserved, although the Brains did win the honor of being covered by Manfred Mann (“Heart in the Street,” from their second album) and Cyndi Lauper (“Money Changes Everything,” from their first) … if you want to call that an honor rather than just a funnel of small royalties. But I digress.

But now, in a recent reunion concert, come the Qs and Brains frontman Tom Gray to do a version of “Money Changes Everything.” And I look and I listen and I remember … and I think, damn, those guys were good.

  1. I still appreciate you introducing me to those guys (and letting me borrow their albums!).
