Namesakes

Filed under: Salute! — Lex @ 1:48 pm

When she was down in Decatur, Ga., recently, Ann took this pictue of the DeKalb County elementary school that’s named after my great-grandfather. (More about him here.) It’s now a magnet school, which I think is cool for no reason I can put my finger on.

If I’ve got the story right, the school is built either on land he donated or land he had to sell after an unsuccessful Congressional campaign left him in debt. Not sure which, and my dad, who would know, is no longer with us.

  1. Congrats to the old guy.
It’s a measure of how long I’ve personally been out of the blogosphere that I am now probably the last person to say ‘Welcome Back!’ Good to be reading this agian, and hope that all is well with you.

  3. Your grandmother told me he donated the land for the school and for the Presbyterian Church (now known as Alexander Memorial Presb.)

  5. Lex – yes, I’m intending to pretty soon (short version of long story – recent silence due to a combination of being insanely busy in real life & some complicated personal upheavals too). Plus, my co-blogger ‘the Renaissance Man’ has just retired & seems to have taken up a more political stance . . . Expect postings soon. Glad that things go well for you.

  6. Hi. My name is Timothy. I am senior in DCSS. I went to DESA @ Hooper Alexander. I am so grateful that your grandfather provided the land. The training in academics as well as arts that the students receive is far beyond any that i have experienced in an elementary school. I attended DESA in 1998-2000. I left the school well trained in many art forms: dance music visual arts and instrumental. I went on to attend DeKalb School of the Arts (the high school) and i found that I was well prepared for what was to come. I again thank you and your family and your grandfather for providing the land. One thing that i thought was left out the story was that the name of the school can not be changed. His name has to remain on it… So when it became the magnet school for performing arts the county added DeKalb Elementary School of the Arts @ Hooper Alexander…. thats all. once again thanks!
