One dead badger, Southern-fried; or, How to impress LeBron James

With all due apologies to my former colleague Steve “Turbo” Witmer, my bud Paul Lubbers and Athenae at First Draft, Wisconsin partisans all, I must say: How ’bout them ‘Cats?!?

The Davidson Wildcats are in the Elite Eight for the first time in thirty-nine years. That’s Thirty. Nine. Years.

And just how good do you have to be to make NBA All-Star LeBron James, who was sitting in the Davidson section, mouth the word “Wow!” on national television?

I got to watch the game on our friends Lee and Emily’s high-def projector, so the picture was about 7 feet diagonally — even my aging eyes could see Just. Fine.

I am a happy camper tonight. And I can only imagine what the campus must be like right now.

  1. Go ‘Cats! Since my team (which shall remain nameless, but which rhymes with Schmuke Glue Bevels) was eliminated in the second round, I’ve been pulling hard for the Cinderellas from Davidson. What a season!

  2. Badgers? We don’t need no stinkin’ Badgers!

  3. Thanks, Blair. But a Cinderella is there through magic. This is no Cinderalla. This is a damn good team.

  4. My boys in light blue (and those boys from the left coast in the other sorta light blue) are in – your turn. I’d be pulling for the ‘Cats anyway, but I have the added impetus that a bunch of the guys that work for me, in addition to my boss’s boss, are huge Jayhawk fans and I’d just as soon not take a chance on having to hear “Rock. Chalk. Jayhawk!” (what the bloody hell does that MEAN!?!) all of next week.

  5. Packing up the car and driving to Detroit was one of the great spur of the moment things we’ve ever done. Great Davidson crowd (even though noise seems to disappear in that huge building).

    Let’s get another win tonight!

  6. Wow, that’s one long drive. Did you take the kids??

  7. Yes, the boys couldn’t miss it. And it was all Rachel’s idea (I originally said no way).

    1304 miles roundtrip.

Ten hours driving last weekend, with two same day roundtrips to Raleigh. Twenty hours driving this weekend. Worth every minute spent in the car.
