In Ken Gormley’s new book, The Death of American Virtue: Clinton vs. Starr, former president Bill Clinton says, “Yeah, I will always have an asterisk after my name, but I hope I’ll have two asterisks: one is ‘they impeached him,’ and the other is ‘He stood up to them and beat them. And he beat them like a yard dog.'”

Bill Clinton was an ass in a lot of ways. And he did break the law.

But if you’re going to impeach a president for breaking a relatively minor law in his personal life, then you also have to impeach a president who ordered and/or carried out war crimes, and publicly confessed to same, as part of his execution, so to speak, of the office.

If, you know, you expect anyone to take you seriously.

(I have not read this book, and I don’t know that I ever will. But Ken Gormley and/or whichever publishing exec picked that title ought to know that American virtue died in about 1493, and certainly no later than the first delivery of smallpox-infested blankets to the natives.)
