“She was a successful business fetus. … Hello?”

Ian Murphy, Green party candidate in the special election for the New York District 26 seat in the U.S. House, actually volunteered at the phone bank of his GOP opponent, Jane Corwin, the weekend before that recent election. Hilarity ensued:

“This is the Sabbath!” an older woman shouts in my ear. “It’s supposed to be a day of rest!”

“I know, ma’am,” I say. “But–

“But nothing!” she yells. “I can’t believe you people are calling me again!”

“But there’s a very important election coming up this Tuesday and if you don’t vote for Jane Corwin horrible  things will happen to you and the people you love…she was a successful business fetus…hello?”

I don’t condone fraud (although, strictly speaking, I don’t think fraud was committed here). I don’t condone electoral dirty tricks (more commonly referred to by the term of art coined by the Watergate-era Nixon crew, “ratf*cking”). But given the preponderance of such stuff in recent years, the overwhelming majority of it perpetrated by the GOP, this little stunt, in an election the GOP cost itself in a red district by splitting its own support and trying to kill Medicare, is pretty darned amusing.
