In this case, “they” is Focus on the Family. Also in this case, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., catches them at it:

I have no idea how good a congresscritter I’d make, and fortunately for you we’ll never find out. But if I ended up chairing a congressional committee, I would do one thing: I would put everybody who came before that committee, including the janitors, under oath. Lying to Congress is already a crime, but maybe the word “perjury” would get people’s attention.

  3. To be generous, I think the witness simply assumed the definition of “nuclear family” from assuming that “parents” must be opposite-sex.

    But you know what happens when you assume.

As much as this topic has been in the news over the years, and as involved as Focus in the Family has been in those discussions, I am disinclined to ascribe this to ignorance, even if that is both a plausible and a simpler explanation. If this were some person from some group in Podunk that no one had ever heard of before, that would be different.
