For the dozen years that I’ve been running this joint, Fred Gregory has been so much a part of it that despite our frequent disagreements we have been the (dys)functional equivalent of co-hosts. In real life, we met in the late 1980s when I was a cops reporter for the News & Record and he was a Drug Enforcement Administration agent. We’ve been friends since and spent 11 of those years as neighbors besides, and my daughter and his granddaughter became great friends.

The sneaky SOB didn’t tell me this in advance, but this morning he was honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, one of North Carolina’s highest civilian honors, for his career service with the DEA, the Drug Tax Division of the N.C. Department of Revenue, and as a magistrate in the 18th Judicial District here in Guilford County. I congratulate him, and so should you.

  1. Where’s he going to plant that tree?

  4. Thanks..Go ahead Nick.. Treat your self to a wee dram of Macallan.

Forgot to tell you but this spring I wandered around down in the southern most part of UK and zooked into Wales. ( Tintern Abey ), Broadway ( charming ), Castle Combe ( very attractive and tranquil ), Bath, Stratford-on Avon , Stonehenge, Brighton ( Pier and Palace.. Awesome ), Salisbury. Leeds Castle, Turnbridge Wells and finished off last night at St. Martin’s Theater for Mousetrap ( Wifey and daughter had seen it in 1990.. so I had to retrace their steps) .

Had a couple of days to wander London again for about the 7th time. Did trudge out to Windsor castle and Hampton Court which I had somehow missed on other trips.

Beachy Head downs by foot and the cliffs by boat were exhillerating . The folks in Eastbourne were warm and friendly

Well no news from beyond the North Wind in some time ?
