Beethoven is (probably) 242 years old today.

Oh, and this, kids, is how you do a flash mob.

When I lived in New York, my boss, a native New Yorker, gave me a copy of Jack Finney’s novel Time and Again. It’s a  sci-fi story about a guy who, courtesy of Secret Government Researchers, gets to travel back in time from present-day New York to late-19th-century New York — which, in many ways (e.g., the Dakota building on Central Park West) is more or less identical.

In the book, which I don’t have handy but still have somewhere in this house, one of the characters asks another something more or less like this: Have you ever given someone a book and felt envy that they were about to read it for the first time, an experience you could never have again?

I’ve had exactly that experience — indeed, with that very book (which everyone with any connection to New York should read), as well as with other works and other experiences. And so it is that I’m delighted to let you peak over John Cole’s shoulder as he experiences, for the first time, Herbert von Karajan conducting Beethoven’s 9th symphony. His response is both admirably succinct and yet so gratifying that it’s possible for a total stranger like me to bask in his enjoyment.
