Question re Droid, bubbles, hubs, popping, etc.

So I’ve got the Droid hooked up to the PC to charge, right? (That is to say, only to charge. It’s not set to sync, and it’s not mounted as a disk drive.) And two weird things are going on:

  1. The WinXP marimba-ish sound that indicates a device is being connected to, or disconnected from, the PC keeps going on and off and on and off, even though the phone and cord are absolutely still and not being messed with.
  2. I keep getting a message saying the device attached to the PC would work faster if I hooked it up to a USB 2.0 port, and it offers me a list. Well, old as this machine is, it’s still recent enough that there’s nothing BUT USB 2.0 on it.

I’m not asking for “solutions,” inasmuch as it’s not really a problem as long as the phone is still charging, which it appears to be. But does anyone have an explanation?

If you have successfully rooted an HTC Eris Android phone and would be willing to walk me through the process, please e-mail. (Addy under “About Lex” to your right.) I’ve found several online tutorials, but they certain require things, like installing programs that aren’t self-installing on the phone, with which I have no experience.

(Yes, I know rooting voids the warranty. My warranty was already voided. It’s OK.)

Am I wrong to love the mental image this creates?

Google Maps Navigation is in beta. Use caution. Do not manipulate this application while driving. Traffic data is not real-time, and directions may be wrong, dangerous, prohibited or involve ferries.

Which gives me an excuse to embed this, which might be the Greatest Film Chase Scene Evah:

Testing the WordPress for Droid app. Looks like most of the functions I use regularly are present and accounted for. Because after a 200-post month, I need MORE reasons and means to blog.
