Exporting freedom; or, The audacity of “nope”

Filed under: Aiee! Teh stoopid! It burns!,Evil — Lex @ 8:14 pm

I’m not sure who coined the phrase “exporting freedom.” (A not-at-all-comprehensive Google search turned up references dating back at least to a few weeks after 9/11.) But I’m not entirely sure this is what whoever coined the phrase had in mind:

Iceland has approved a package of laws designed to make the country an international haven for reporters. The laws, which were both inspired and assisted by Wikileaks, offer sweeping speech protections for individuals and groups. The laws protect the anonymity of anonymous sources, empower whistle-blowers, and seek to expand the freedom of information, as well as other provisions.

Don’t get me wrong — I like this. There are some caveats, particularly with respect to libel. But in general, if you’re like me and you value free speech, this sounds good?

So why do I call it “exporting” freedom rather than, say, “spreading” freedom?

Because our current president, while seeing no problems with what torturers have done in the past, is going out of his way to crack down on whistleblowers, even whistleblowers of the past.

President Obama has said he doesn’t want to focus on the past when it comes to prosecuting torturers. But focusing on the past when it comes to Bush-era whistleblowers? Oh, man, he’ll do that all day. Jackass.
